PRESS RELEASE

  

Subject: -             Protection to the Sealed Lead Acid VRLA Batteries

 

M/s Pakistan Accumulators (Pvt) Ltd (the Applicant) is a manufacturer of automotive and lead acid batteries with brand names of VOLTA and OSAKA. It has approached the National Tariff Commission (the Commission) with a request to increase customs duty on import of Sealed Lead Batteries falling under PCT Nos.8507.2010 & 8507.2090 up to 35%. The current customs duties on these PCTís are 20% and 10% respectively. The Applicantís request is based on the following grounds:-

 

(i)                  The batteries falling under PCT codes 8507.1010, 8507.1020 and 8507.1090 which are subject to 35% customs duty and additional customs duty under SRO 693 (i)/2006 are being misdeclared and are being cleared under above referred PCT Codes where rate of customs duty is 20% and 10%.

(ii)                The Applicant has sufficient production capacity to meet not only local requirements but also catering regional markets in exports.  The industry is also exporting batteries to more than 25 countries all over the word.

(iii)              The imports of these batteries causing loss to national exchequer besides damaging local battery industry.

 

2.             Accordingly, the Commission has initiated an inquiry under National Tariff Commission Act 1990. All parties having an interest in the business relating to or associated with the imports, manufacturing and marketing of Sealed lead acid batteries are invited to make their views/comments known within 10 days of the issue of this Press Release duly supported with data and evidence. The views/comments may be sent to the Secretary, National Tariff Commission, 4th Floor, State Life Building No. 5, Blue Area, Islamabad Fax: 0092-51-9221205.

 

3.             A public hearing in this regard is scheduled to be held on July 25, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hearing Room of the Commission, 11th Floor, State Life Building No. 5, Blue Area, Islamabad.

 

4.             All interested parties, who wish to appear before the hearing are hereby advised to get themselves registered with the Commission latest by July 22, 2013 for participation in the Public Hearing.
